Estate story

The Lequio Family

Prinsi is a family-run estate in Neive, one of the historic villages of the Barbaresco appellation in Piedmont’s Langhe. Owned by the Lequio family for three generations, the winery is rooted in a clear philosophy: great wines begin in the vineyard and should faithfully express grape variety, soil, and place. The estate is especially focused on Nebbiolo for Barbaresco DOCG, drawing from several of Neive’s most respected vineyard areas. Prinsi’s wines combine family tradition, careful farming, and a restrained cellar approach aimed at preserving the natural character of the grapes.

Why this place matters

Nebbiolo’s Graceful Expression of Terroir

Barbaresco is one of Piedmont’s great Nebbiolo appellations, centered around the villages of Barbaresco, Neive, and Treiso in the Langhe. Often described as the more graceful counterpart to Barolo, Barbaresco combines Nebbiolo’s hallmark structure and longevity with lifted aromatics, refined tannins, and a distinctive elegance. Its wines often show notes of red cherry, rose, violet, spice, licorice, and earth, gaining nuance and silkiness with age. Barbaresco’s varied exposures, calcareous marls, and village-by-village distinctions allow Nebbiolo to express terroir with unusual clarity.

Family & estate

A Constant in Barbaresco

The Lequio family’s history at Prinsi stretches back to the late 1940s, when Ottavio Lequio began bottling wines from his own grapes. His son Franco entered the family business in 1967 at just 16 years old, dedicating himself fully to viticulture and winemaking alongside his wife, Silvana. Their son Daniele joined the estate in 1999 after completing his studies as an agronomist, bringing a new generation’s energy while continuing the family’s long-standing commitment to the Langhe. Today, Daniele oversees winemaking and sales, Silvana and Chiara manage hospitality, cooking up wonderful, traditional and homemade dishes.

Cellar philosophy

Beneath the Estate

Prinsi’s cellar philosophy is based on preserving the natural essence of each grape and allowing the wines to reflect the territory where they were grown. Grapes are gently pressed and destemmed at harvest, then fermented in stainless steel tanks in a dedicated vinification area. Younger wines remain in stainless steel to retain freshness and immediacy, while Barbera d’Alba and Nebbiolo destined for Barbaresco DOCG are aged in wooden barrels and casks. The estate’s massive, underground aging room, with its thick walls and naturally cool conditions, provides an ideal environment for slow maturation.

Farming & philosophy

Historic Crus of Barbaresco

The Prinsi estate covers 25 hectares in Neive, with 13 hectares planted to vine and a strong emphasis on Nebbiolo for Barbaresco DOCG. The family farms important vineyard areas within the municipality, including Gaia Principe, Gallina, Fausoni, Basarin, and Gallina. These sites are valued for their exposure, soil quality, and distinctive microclimates, all of which contribute to grapes of depth, structure, and personality. Daniele supervises the vineyard work with the support of Silvana and a trusted team, maintaining the family’s belief that careful farming is the foundation of memorable wine.
